Toy Story

 

Project Description:

Second graders will design and build a toy and will write a story about what the toy does when no one is around. The toy and their story will be donated to children in need. 

 

Essential Question:

 What is the magic of toys? 

 

Timeline for the project:

 

*Launch: students are asked to bring in their favorite toy to school and leave them on their 
chair/table before dismissal. The next morning, when students come in they see all toys 
rearranged/set up purposefully around the room. Teachers ask students to think of what 
happened over night. How did they get there? What were the toys doing over night to end up 
in these positions? 
*Visit students at another school/organization in order to investigate their buddy’s interests to 
begin the designing phase of creating a toy for them. 
*Poll students of similar age to their buddy to determine popular toy trends 

*Begin to design and build prototype of their toy. 
*Brainstorm and draft story about what the toy does at night. 
*Critique and revise both the toy and the story. 
*Create final draft of both toy and story. 
*Give the final product to the buddy.
