Students will learn about specific foods in the different food groups such as dairy, grains and meat.  In addition, they will learn about a variety of herbs and plant three of their choice.  Students will experiment with making several kid-friendly recipes that they can use in their future and share with their families.  They will build herb boxes that will hold their herbs and eventually be taken home to utilize in household meals.  Students will also be displaying their knowledge of where food comes from and sharing recipes by creating a placemat that can be used in the home.

Why:

  • To understand where our food comes from.

  • To learn how we can make our own food.

  • To understand how plants grow and how to take care of plants.

  • To learn more about our environment and how it connects to us and what we eat

  • To practice hypothesizing and then researching to find out the truth

  • To try new things and experience something new.

Essential Questions:

  • How can we make our own healthy, fresh and tasty food?

  • Where does our food come from?

Stages:

  • Launch with a tasting of a variety of simple foods that contain herbs.

  • Interview families on what herbs they use the most and enjoy.

  • Create a graph displaying our findings.

  • Plant three herbs of the student's choice.

  • Keep an "Herb Journal" in order to document notes and new knowledge.

  • Hypothesize and research about a variety of food types other than herbs.

  • Fieldwork at Suzie's Organic Farm.

  • Make several recipes containing herbs.

  • Make herb boxes out of wood to house herb plants.

  • Work in groups to create a placemat containing food and recipe information.
