Second Grade Sight Words
How can I practice my sight words? Well, here are some ideas:
1. Play a Card Game:
-
Memory: Choose about 10 words that you need to practice. Make sure you have each of these words written on two index cards. Mix all the cards up and place them face down. Turn over two cards at a time, read each word and spell it out loud. If the words match take the cards. The player with the most card matches wins.
-
Go Fish: Choose about 10 words that you need to practice. Make sure you have each of these words written on two index cards. Mix the cards up and pass five cards to each player. The rest of the cards go in the center face down. Player One asks another player if they have the match to one of their cards. If the other player has it, they must give it up. If the player does not have the word, say "go fish!" and Player One chooses a card from the center. When any player has a match they may put them down while reading the word and spelling it out loud. THe player with the most matches wins.
-
Pursuit: Choose about 10-15 words that you need to practice. Put these words in a circle face up. Each player marks a word using a small object. Players should be equally spaced apart. All players move in the same direction. Roll a die and move your object that number of spaces. Read the word you have landed on and spell it out loud. The object of the game is to catch the other player(S).
2. Choose about 10-15 words you need to practice. Give a family member a spelling test. Ask them to make a couple of mistakes on purpose. Then, you are the teacher and need to find their mistakes and explain the correct spelling to the family member.
3. Choose about 10-15 words you need to practice. Write a story using all those words.
4. Write a song to help you remember how to spell a few of the words.
5. Make up a dance to go along with spelling a few of the words.
6. Make flashcards: write one word on each index card. When you are done making the flashcards, study them and have a family member quiz you on the spelling of each word.
7. Spell the word with your mouth as you write the letters on paper.
**Let me know if you have more ways to study your sight words and I will add them to the list!
