Monster Mash: A Project About Worries

Essential Questions:

  • Why do we worry?

  • How are our worries different?

  • How can we help others feel less worried?

  • How does worrying affect our brain?

Project Summary:

To begin this project, students will investigate monsters!  We will do a variety of activities that will focus on what monsters look like, what they do and how they make us feel.  We will then start to focus on the feeling of being worried.  We will discuss what makes us worried and then brainstorm ways we cope with our worries.  We will be listening to guest speakers who are experts in the field of mental health and visit the Monster Exhibit at the Museum of Man.

Our students will also work with kindergarten buddies in order to have a conversation about worries that they may have. Through interviews, surveys, drafts and critique, our students will design and create a monster puppet for a their kinder buddy. The specific worry that the kindergarten buddy has will guide the second grader in the design process.  In addition to the puppet, our students will write a dedication to their kindergarten buddy explaining why the puppet they made is especially for them. Though this project, our students will also have many opportunites to work in groups and practice their understanding of empathy for others.

Our work will be exhibited on the night of November 17th!
