Students will investigate how different variables of a car, such as weight and size of wheels, will affect the way the car works. They will use their knowledge from these investigations to make important design choices. Students will work collaboratively to design and build a car that they will drive in a derby race.

Why:

  • To emphasize the importance of working together to achieve a common goal.

  • To continue to practice the importance of critique and creating beautiful work.

  • To use their knowledge of measuring accurately for an authentic purpose.

  • To practice using tools safely and appropriately.

Essential Question:

  • How can we design and build a working car?

Stages:

  • Students will investigate different variables of a car.

  • Students will work in groups to brainstorm and design a car using knowledge derived from their previous investigations.

  • Students will use their designs to begin building their frames.

  • Students will work together to design a unique body for their car.

  • Students will participate in a derby race once all cars are completed. Time and date TBD.

Our process will be displayed and celebrated at Exhibition Night on Wednesday, March 19th!
